Elderly Housing in Gilroy, CA

SIZE: 75 d.u.
DATE: 1982
COST: 3,013,600

The covered sitting porch and low fenced private patio at each apartment face each other and major pedestrian walkways to encourage interaction among residents and provide extra security, as any visitor is easily viewed from many apartments.

Seventy-five 1- and 2-bedroom units of housing for the elderly on a six acre, park-like site. Four-unit buildings offer private entrances, each on a different facade. The cottage-like environment of these HUD-funded, subsidized dwellings easily dispels the negative image usually associated with low income government housing.

A centrally located community building, pictured here, provides laundry, crafts and game spaces, a lounge, office, mailboxes, therapeutic spa and maintenance facilities. An internal emergency vehicle drive-through is concealed by connecting two parking lots with the Community Building patio to provide visually separate, but continuous pavement. Although neighbors were initially vehemently opposed to this development, they now boast of its quality.
